Hi!
So last week I returned to college after a loong Christmas holiday, and needless to say I was knackered in less than a few days. I'm in my first year here, and my typical week at college is generally a bit tiring because of the type of course I'm doing, (we'll talk about that later), so I wanted to share what my week looks like whilst I'm here.
Monday
So, I nicknamed my Mondays "manic Monday's" simply due to how busy I am the minute the week starts! I start at 9am with theory class, before I go to the lecture theatre for 2 hours of lectures on Music, Culture and Performance, and Artist Development. Not the most relaxing start to the week to say the least! In the afternoon, depending on the week, I may have a singing lesson or a seminar. Then, in the evening I have chamber music which lasts for 2 hours, and can either start at 3pm or 6pm. Meaning my Mondays will either finish at 5pm or 8pm depending on the week haha.
Tuesday
So from here the rest of my week is less bulky than my Monday but there's still a lot on! My Tuesday gives me a lovely late start, with my first lesson being at 11am or 12pm. This is "physical awareness" and it basically covers dance, exercise for singers, so working on your core and a lot of cardio, yoga and stretching and much more. Needless to say I come out of this lesson knackered, and with an empty 1 litre water bottle! After this there's usually time for me to grab a shower, and if I have a singing lesson I would head off to that straight after I've freshened up. Then later in the afternoon I have Italian language class, where we learn the history of the language, using it in conversation and in song/recitative.
Wednesday
My Wednesday often begins with a seminar in the morning, which will either be on Music, Culture and Performance, or Artist development, and will run for an hour. Depending on what time this started, I will either be able to have a break, or will have to head straight off for Symphony Chorus rehearsal, which lasts for an hour and a half starting at 12pm. A couple of hours after this, we have performance class, where we can perform, watch others, and take notes on advice from the teacher for that week. Again, I may or may not have a singing lesson, either with just my teacher, or my teacher and a pianist to work with.
Thursday
My days definitely get lighter as the week comes to an end, and my first class on Thursday is at 12pm - with a language repertoire class. This is similar to the performance class but focuses more on the language, either, English, German, Italian or French, depending on the week. Much later in the afternoon, I have Stagecraft for an hour, focusing more on developing acting skills.
Friday
I'm lucky in the sense that my shortest day of the week is also my last one, and my weekend can begin early!!!! On Friday morning I have Musicianship for an hour and a half, and from 12pm my weekend has begun!
The reason a lot of what I have said includes "depending", "maybe", and "if", is because we get our schedule every week. Academic lessons are put up on the system, as well as our other classes, but we still receive an email of next weeks schedule with our performance, language, acting and so on, classes. After writing this up, we will also be emailed our private singing lesson schedule for the week, and this also has to be transferred into my college schedule. If there are any clashes between lessons, it means my schedule for that day has to be rearranged, i.e. attending an earlier class. Then in between all these classes, there may be other classes on that we have the option to attend eg. if an assignment is due and you need help. There is also a range of masterclasses and concerts to attend, which are recommended and really useful, and may be able to coinside with your timetable for that week.
So that's a pretty brief overview into what my life looks like when I'm at college. And this is just my schedule...I haven't even begun on the workload haha!! But as busy and crazy as it can be, it sure is a lot of fun :)
That's it for now, speak again soon :)
